At Irish, all students are second language learners. In order for students to be successful in learning academic content, as well as make growth both in their first and their second language, each grade level allows time every day for direct instruction in their second language, and how it connects to their first language. In the primary grades students learn Spanish or English through songs, games, and stories. They learn common and necessary phrases that they may use during the school day, as well as academic language that they can use during their content time. As they grow, second language instruction becomes more targeted to prepare them for more deep immersion in language content. In addition, second language instruction is integrated within their literacy content time.
