I have been teaching preschool for 9 years, but this is my first year in the district. I have a Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University and a Masters in Teaching from the University of Northern Colorado.
My favorite thing about teaching is watching the kids master new skills and find their talents. I love seeing kids learn about their world and sharing in their triumphs! Preschool is so full of joy, it's my favorite grade to teach!
My favorite children's book is Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. It is such a great story of friendship, acceptance and teamwork!
I love to spend time in the mountains, whether it be driving through the beautiful scenery, wading in the chilly river or visiting my favorite spot in Estes! I love to read all sorts of books, explore the shops in Old Town, and spend time with my wonderful family and friends!
I love that Irish is a bilingual school! It is so amazing to see the kids switching between languages with such ease, it is an incredible talent speak two languages! I love the connectedness of families, teachers, and students. This school is clearly a community that reaches beyond education and classroom doors!
"People who wonder whether the glass is half empty or half full miss the point...The glass is refillable!"
Our curriculum is a student-led curriculum developed to incorporate academic learning within more social learning. We have a central theme such as Buildings, Clothes or Simple Machines along with daily shared writing activities and group experiences to explore big picture ideas. We have daily small groups, challenges and books that are used to highlight more specific aspects of the general theme as well as targeted academic skills. We are bilingual and we try to speak, read and write in both languages each day to help kids grow their skills and knowledge in both languages.
Here in Miss Jess's class we believe kids can thrive with responsibiity, structure and purpose. We work hard to teach kids to be respectful to their peers and others they meet. We teach them to use their words to express their needs and preferences, as well as advocate for themselves in every situation. We make sure kids feel heard, loved and wanted each and every day. We learn academic skills together, knowing it is ok to ask for and accept help from others. We know mistakes are part of learning and practice makes us better. Our classroom is full of artwork and photos, colorful displays about what we are learning and experiencing in our classroom and is organized to promote independence and self-sufficiency in play and other daily activities. We welcome and accept everyone who comes in our classroom and make sure to say goodbye when they leave!
